Police report lodged against racist video targeting Transport Ministry, says Wee

PETALING JAYA: A police report has been lodged against a three-minute video accusing the Transport Ministry of amending laws on drink-driving to target Indians.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong confirmed that his private secretary Ong Cher Chin lodged a report at the Putrajaya police station at 11.35am on Thursday (March 18) against lies about amendments to the Road Transport Act.

"It is hoped that PDRM (Royal Malaysia Police) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will investigate this matter and take stern action against those behind the video which spread false news which contained racial slants that could disrupt harmony in the country," Dr Wee said in a Facebook post the same day that included a photograph of Ong's police report.

In his report, Ong said he learned of the matter at his office in Putrajaya at 8am on Thursday from a post on former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's Facebook regarding a viral video circulated via Whatsapp on the amendments to the law.

"The video is clearly a lie and racist, aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the Transport Ministry, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong and also MCA," Ong added.

He said it was generally known that the Road Transport (Amendment) Act 2020, which carries heavier penalties for traffic offences, particularly related to Sections 41 to 45, came into effect on Oct 23.

He added the amendments imposed stiffer penalties on those who cause death due to recklessness or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Ong urged the police to investigate the matter thoroughly and bring to book those responsible for the video, which had the potential to disrupt national harmony.

In an earlier post on Thursday, Dr Wee thanked Najib who had condemned the video as propaganda to incite hatred against MCA and Barisan.

"The video alleged that the punishment for drunk drivers was deliberately increased last year to prey on Indians because the punishment for drivers under the influence of drugs was not included.

"This is false. The Act was amended not only to increase the punishment for drunk drivers but the same heavy punishment is also imposed on those who drive under the influence of drugs," Najib said.

The individuals behind the three-minute video accused the Transport Ministry of amending laws on drink-driving to target Indians, a claim that Dr Wee slammed as a malicious act. - Star
