From April 1, spectators allowed at sports events subject to SOP, says Ismail Sabri

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has agreed to allow spectators at sports events in stadiums and sports venues from April 1, says Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

He said the decision was made following a briefing by the Youth and Sports Ministry during the National Security Council (NSC) technical meeting on Tuesday (March 16).

"The briefing was on the application to allow spectators into stadiums and sports venues for championships such as the Malaysia League, as well proposed standard operating procedures (SOP).

"After views and risk assessment by the Health Ministry, the meeting agreed to allow spectators to attend such events with conditions," he said in his daily briefing on Thursday (March 18).

He said in areas under the conditional movement control order (MCO), only 10% capacity or 2,000 spectators (whichever is lower) will be allowed with supervision.

"In areas under recovery MCO, 25% capacity or 8,000 spectators (whichever is lower), will be allowed, also under supervision.

"All organised championships with spectators are subject to permission by the Youth and Sports Ministry," he said, adding that this would commence on April 1 with two Malaysia League matches.

He said the two matches would act as a trial to assess the effectiveness of the Spectator Management Protocols.

"The Youth and Sports Ministry, NSC and Health Ministry will also monitor and conduct assessments of protocol compliance, especially on spectator entry and exit.

"Among the SOPs in place are that tickets will only be available online; physical distancing of between 1.5m and 2m for spectators; sales only at shops currently within the stadium or venue; and entry and exit movements must be scheduled and organised," he said.

He added that a detailed SOP will be made available on the NSC and Youth and Sports Ministry websites. - Star
