After 30 years in Malaysia, Rohingya refugee wants resettlement following death threats

A Rohingya refugee Zafar Ahmad Abdul Ghani has appealed to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to consider his application for resettlement.

Zafar, who is the president of the Myanmar Ethnic Rohingya Human Rights Organisation Malaysia (Merhrom), made the appeal one year after he received death threats following fake social media posts linked to him.

He had not left his home since then due to safety concerns.

"Today marks one year since false accusations against me on social media platforms on April 21, 2020.

'I urgently appeal to UNHCR and resettlement countries to reconsider my case for urgent resettlement as I constantly receive threats, harassment, and insults.

"I hope justice will prevail," Zafar said in his tweet today.

In April last year, fake posts had accused him of calling the Malays "stupid", demanding equal rights and Malaysian citizenship for Rohingya refugees.

He was also accused of questioning Malaysian authorities over their refusal to accept boats ferrying Rohingya refugees.

The allegation came amid authorities in the same month preventing boats with Rohingya refugees from landing on its shores.

Subsequently, the 51-year old man apologised on social media on behalf of the refugees if their remarks had hurt the feelings of the locals. - Mkini
