The Communications and Multimedia Ministry denied that its minister had ordered ministry employees to "like" and "share" his social media accounts and the accounts of his deputy.
"The ministry wishes to deny this allegation. The minister issued no such order regarding this matter.
"This ministry also always encourages the involvement of its staff members in supporting efforts to disseminate information to the public through social media platforms," said a media statement released by the ministry this evening.
However, the statement did not address whether such an order had been issued by any other officials in the ministry.
Earlier today, it was reported that the Communications and Multimedia Ministry allegedly issued an order to its civil servants to "like" the social media accounts of its minister Saifuddin Abdullah, deputy minister Zahidi Zainul Abidin and secretary-general Mohammad Mentek.
Several screenshots of text messages bearing the purported order went viral on social media last night.
According to the screenshots, the ministry's top management decided during a meeting to request all staff under the ministry and its agencies to "follow" the senior officials' social media accounts.
Several staff members of the ministry who spoke to Malaysiakini on condition of anonymity had confirmed the existence of such an order which they said was issued about a week ago. - Mkini
