Gerakan dares DAP to contest Malay-majority seats in GE15

Gerakan has challenged the DAP to contest in all Malay-majority seats in the forthcoming 15th general elections to prove that the party is not championing issues affecting a single race.

Gerakan president Dominic Lau (above) claimed that the DAP will declare its opposition to racial politics, but when it comes time for seat negotiations, their actions will be to the contrary.

"In our analysis, out of 42 Parliament seats that they won, 11 have more than 70 percent Chinese voters, while another 12 seats have more than 50 percent.

"So when they (DAP) said it's not about Chinese helping Chinese, Malays helping Malays, Indians helping Indians, (taking into account seats contested) that is not true," said Lau during a press conference at the Gerakan headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today, as quoted by Berita Harian.

At the same time, Lau said Gerakan has yet to decide on the number of seats it will contest but that its focus lies in drawing Chinese support towards Perikatan Nasional.

"At this stage, I can inform that we will be contesting in more seats than during our time with BN.

"Our focus in GE15 would be to increase the number of non-Malay, non-Bumiputera votes," he said.

In GE14, Gerakan's former Simpang Renggam MP Liang Teck Meng lost the party's sole Parliament seat to Maszlee Malik.

The party also lost in all other contests - 10 Parliament and 31 state assembly seats nationwide. It then exited from BN on June 23, 2018, and its then-president Mah Siew Keong resigned. - Mkini
