Communications and Multimedia Minister Saifuddin Abdullah has advised actors to be more careful and not give lack of job offers as an excuse to accept projects with gambling elements.
This came after one of the actors involved in the online casino Raya music video said they, as freelancers, were desperate for jobs due to the Covid-19 situation.
Saifuddin (above) said although the country was still hit by Covid-19, the entertainment industry was allowed to operate and the industry had offered a lot of new jobs for actors and production crew.
"So I hope (actors) don't give excuses such as no job offers," he said at a media conference in Putrajaya today.
The ministry, Saifuddin said, had organised numerous programmes to revive the entertainment industry, as well as took care of artiste welfare through visits by the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas), among others.
Two Hari Raya music videos that promoted gambling went viral on social media recently and irked the public, especially Muslims.
The police confirmed both videos were from the same production house and the actors were paid RM180 per person.
On the investigations, Bukit Aman CID (Intelligence/Operations) deputy director Dev Kumar said the police were still probing the issue and have yet to identify the mastermind who funded the video.
"We are not sure. We have yet to reach that stage (of the investigation). Now, we are currently at the level (of probing) actors and producers.
"After that, we will know who is the mastermind who paid the producers to create the videos," he said.
Yesterday, actor Bront Palarae questioned the arrest of actors and crew members when the source responsible for the video is the online gambling operator and those who funded the making of the video.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairperson Fadhlullah Suhaimi Abdul Malek said even if the commission applied for the videos to be removed from social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube, their request would not be fully fulfilled.
"We must understand, the platform providers who are based abroad may hold a different value than Malaysians.
"What's bad in our eyes, for them, not a problem. So we cannot expect 100 percent (request fulfilled).
"Some people think, when we apply, they (platform providers) will remove the said content. Actually no, but we will try our best to get them to remove it."
Fadhlullah added MCMC had asked the platform providers to remove 61 videos related to the online casino Raya video but only 13 percent were removed so far. - Mkini
