I’m still in opposition, says Dr M after attending govt event

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has given an assurance that he is still part of the opposition, after he was seen attending a government event organised by the rural development ministry in Langkawi today.

In a Twitter thread with the hashtag #PulangKeLangkawi he said he attended the event in his capacity as Langkawi MP, to show appreciation to the private sector that has helped Langkawi residents through the government agency.

“My attendance has no political links whatsoever. This does not mean that I have become a government supporter,” he said. “I am still a part of the opposition party,” he added.

Mahathir, who is chairman of Pejuang, maintained that his goal was to ensure that the Malays do not lag behind in their own country.

Meanwhile, he said, despite recognising the private sector for their donations to the rural community in Langkawi, he believed there was still a need to educate and train the lower-income so they would not rely too much on government handouts.

Langkawi remains as one of the locations hardest-hit by the Covid-19 pandemic due to its reliance on tourist dollars.

Recently, in an interview with Malaysiakini, Mahathir said efforts to woo him had failed as he did not wish to collaborate with “criminals” who were backing the current Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration.

Hamzah Zainudin, PN’s secretary-general in response said the party was open to welcoming anyone into the ruling coalition.

He said anyone could join as long as the requirements in the constitution were met. - FMT
