Kasthuri takes down Ramadan aid post after 'bigoted' attacks

Batu Kawan MP Kasthuriraani Patto removed photos from social media where she was seen distributing Ramadan aid to needy families in her constituency.

This came after users questioned why she, as a non-Muslim, was handing out the aid which came from the Penang Island Zakat Management Centre (PUZ).

Zakat is an obligation that Muslims have to donate to charity.

"I am an elected representative who serves all, regardless of race, religion, and even political affiliation.

"Since the attacks against me and my office by extremist bigots are growing by the minute, unfortunately, PUZ is also unnecessarily attacked.

"Therefore I have deleted all my posts regarding the aid extended by PUZ and handed over by our office," said Kasthuri in a post this afternoon.

She said it was sad that after over 60 years since independence, Malaysians were still being targeted by groups who use vulgar, hurtful, racist, and sexist words.

"A few days back, I helped to hand out. I visited them in their homes and went to the mosque to hand over too. Not from me but from Pusat Urus Zakat.

"The issue exploded yesterday when certain parties started attacking me with racist and bigoted words, questioning how I, as a non-Muslim, was giving out aid from PUZ," said Kasthuri.

The DAP lawmaker said she had no other intention than to ensure that aid is given as soon as possible to families in need as well as to those who have approached her office for help.

"In one of the events, we were approached by a senior citizen who fractured her kneecap (who asked) for a walking stick to help her move around and financial appeal from a mother for a daughter suffering from thalassemia," she said.

Recently, Kasthuri's party colleague, Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim Chee Keong, also found his motives questioned after he carried out a number of charitable acts to help the poor, some of whom were Malays. - Mkini
