Kelantan hospitals, quarantine centres nearly full

Beds for Covid-19 patients in hospitals and six quarantine and treatment centres (PKRC) in Kelantan are almost filled up following a sharp spike of positive cases over the last few days.

Five existing PKRC recorded between 79 and 103 percent occupancy, while a newly opened PKRC is filled up to 33 percent of capacity.

Given the situation, Kelantan Health director Dr Zaini Hussin said there are plans to open another PKRC soon at the Youth Department Hall in Panji, Kota Baru.

"If cases continue to increase, there will be patients forced to quarantine at home.

"Aside from that, we received help from the University Sains Malaysia laboratory and Ipoh's public health laboratory to reduce the number of pending samples," he said.

Kelantan yesterday recorded its highest number of new cases with 332 cases and two deaths.

Zaini said so far, Kelantan also continued to record the highest infectivity rate of 1.43 as of yesterday, compared to the national rate of 1.16.

He said new clusters were detected at workplaces, schools and mosques during classes or meetings.

"23 percent of cases were detected through symptomatic and non-symptomatic screenings, as well as in red zones with no known epidemiology relations.

"The percentage shows a high in-community infectivity rate," he said. - Mkini
