Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin today refuted the narrative pushed by anti-vaccine groups that the Covid-19 vaccines are supposedly ineffective.
This was after the Health Ministry reported 40 of its staff members, most of them only partially vaccinated, had been infected with Covid-19.
"Anti-vaxxers had a field day on social media claiming that it proved that the Covid-19 vaccine is like injecting water.
"Netizens who only read the headline shared them to friends," Khairy said in a Facebook post.
However, he pointed out that 31 out of the 40 who were infected were not fully vaccinated as they have yet to obtain their second dose.
Khairy added that even if they were fully vaccinated, the Covid-19 vaccines do not necessarily make a person completely immune to the virus.
"But if we are fully vaccinated and get infected with Covid-19, we will not experience severe symptoms.
"This vaccine protects us from severe symptoms such as admission to the intensive care unit and needing breathing assistance as well as death (due to Covid-19).
"That was why nine of the infected Health Ministry staff who had received their second dose did not experience any severe symptoms or didn't have any symptoms at all," said Khairy, who is in charge of the national immunisation plan against Covid-19.
He added that a person will only be properly protected against Covid-19 two weeks after receiving the second dose.
The second dose is normally administered three weeks after the first dose.
