KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has proposed to Australia that both sides work together on mutual recognition of vaccination certification to facilitate cross-border travel and economic recovery for both countries from the fallout caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Foreign minister Hishammuddin Hussein said mutual recognition is crucial for the 19,000 Malaysian students who have been waiting to return to Australia to resume their studies.

Hishammuddin said he made the proposal to Australia’s foreign minister and minister for women, Marise Payne, during a virtual meeting on Monday.

“We also had a constructive discussion on our respective national vaccination roll-out plans which are currently under way,” he said.

He said they had also discussed regional and international issues such as developments in Myanmar, where more than 700 people have been killed in protests against a military coup on Feb 1.

He said he and Payne later had a meeting with their Brunei counterpart Haji Erywan Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof on mental health issues. - FMT
