PETALING JAYA: The Selangor government has been urged to dip into its RM2.56 billion reserves to help businesses and the unemployed, including giving hawkers in the state RM1,000 each.
In making the call, MCA central committee member Lau Chin Kok said the Selangor government has not shown enough determination to combat Covid-19 with strong policies.
He said even though the health ministry was responsible for leading the charge against Covid-19, the state government should also leverage on its own resources to support the public and businesses, especially small and medium enterprises.
Lau said Selangor’s financial performance remained largely healthy despite the pandemic and the state had reserves as high as RM2.56 billion. However residents and businesses in the state were in dire straits.
He proposed that the state government provide cash aid of RM1,000 to hawkers and RM300 a month for three months for the unemployed.
He also called for an interest-free loan programme worth RM500 million for SMEs; 50% wage subsidy for SMEs for three months; and financial assistance for the entertainment and tourism sectors.
Selangor, one of the worst hit states in the country has recorded over 10,000 cases in the past week.
Earlier today, health minister Dr Adham Baba said the ministry is considering enforcing stricter SOPs or even a full-scale movement control order in Selangor if the state fails to curb Covid-19 infections. - FMT
