Covid-19 deaths (Dec 9): 28 reported fatalities, total at 30,746

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported a total of 28 new Covid-19 fatalities yesterday (Dec 8), bringing the cumulative death toll to 30,746.

Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions with 933 deaths per 1 million population.

From the newly reported deaths yesterday, 14.3 percent or 4 died before they could receive treatment at a hospital.

Selangor recorded the highest number of new deaths at 6, making up 21.4 percent of the newly reported fatalities.

The remaining deaths were in Sabah (5), Johor (3), Kedah (2), Negeri Sembilan (2), Pahang (2), Perak (2), Penang (2), Kelantan (1), Malacca (1), Terengganu (1) and Kuala Lumpur (1).

No new deaths were reported in Perlis, Sarawak, Labuan and Putrajaya.

A total of 28 out of the 28 reported deaths or 100.0 percent happened in the last seven days.

An average of 47 Covid-19 deaths was reported daily in the last 30 days compared to the seven-day average of 39, indicating a downward trend.

As of yesterday, there were 60,878 active Covid-19 cases. This is a reduction of 4.5 percent from the 63,740 active infections a week ago.

Compared to 30 days ago, the number of active cases has fallen by 1.4 percent from 61,762.

Cluster-linked infections

The Health Ministry's post-midnight update also provided further insights into the new Covid-19 infections yesterday.

From the 5,020 new cases yesterday, a total of 154 of them could be traced to ongoing Covid-19 clusters.

From the cluster-linked cases, 116 (75.3 percent) were from workplaces while 32 (20.8 percent) were from education institutions.

The remaining cases were traced to clusters related to community transmissions (3 - 1.9 percent), religious events (2 - 1.3 percent) and detention centres (1 - 0.6 percent).
