GPS promises continuity, independence from other political forces

SARAWAK POLLS | Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has made 33 pledges to voters in its manifesto for the 12th state election.

The pledges read by GPS leader Abang Johari Abang Openg today stressed the need for continuity and independence from other political forces.

"Sarawak requires a coalition of Sarawakian parties that are strong, united and willing to take care of the people of Sarawak without being controlled or influenced by political parties outside (of the state).

"GPS is a coalition of Sarawakian parties which represents all Sarawakians. We have administered Sarawak using our own formula and made decisions without having to refer to anyone at the federal level," he said.

Unlike some opposition parties, GPS' 33 pledges are outlines of their objectives rather than explicit pledges.

Among others, GPS promised autonomy for Sarawak, upholding the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and recognising native customary rights land.

GPS also pledged to turn Sarawak into a "developed and high-income state" by 2030.

Harapan blocked projects

Abang Johari said GPS has a proven track record and that the Pakatan Harapan administration previously cancelled many projects as well as funding for the state.

"GPS took care of Sarawak by reviving these projects that were cancelled by using state funding," he added.

The incumbent chief minister further said that the GPS administration had already initiated several key development projects which will be realised in a few years and urged voters to support the coalition for continuity.

Among others, Abang Johari cited the Pan Borneo Highway, the Second Trunk Road, the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) and the 5G infrastructure as ongoing projects.

He also promised that all households in Sarawak will have access to treated water and electricity by 2025.

Abang Johari said the ongoing rural transformation programme, which involved RM5 million in funding for each assemblyperson, was going well and promised to extend the programme.
