KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Air Aviation Sdn Bhd has embarked on the state’s first-ever fully integrated cargo terminal.

The proposed terminal is a long-term venture between Sabah Air, which comes under the state finance ministry, and Pos Malaysia, the country’s largest logistics and postal company.

The new cargo terminal will be a technologically advanced hub to manage general and perishable cargo as well as e-commerce once fully operational, said Sabah Air chairman Kenny Chua.

He said the project, which will manage air freight requirements for the whole of Borneo, will help to jumpstart the state’s economy.

“The cargo terminal will benefit from Sabah’s geostrategic location and will become the preferred gateway between Borneo and economic power houses in North Asia such as China, South Korea and Japan,” he said in a statement here today.

“The project is anticipated to create approximately 560 jobs and a further 2,500 indirect job opportunities in the local market.”

Sabah Air and Pos Malaysia signed a memorandum of intent in a ceremony witnessed by chief minister Hajiji Noor here today.

Chua said the core mission of the cargo terminal is to ensure sustainable growth in the aviation sector, while ensuring a level playing field for all stakeholders of the industry. - FMT
