Undi18: Voters will appear on electoral roll a month after 18th birthday

Malaysians who reach 18 years old will make it onto the electoral rolls about a month after their birthday.

This is based on a presentation by de facto Law Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar during an engagement session with MPs today, in which documents were sighted by Malaysiakini.

"The 18-year-old voters would be eligible to cast their vote after the Election Commission (EC) certifies and gazette (their names) in the Supplementary Electoral Rolls.

"The process to register voters automatically will take up to 1.5 months from the day an eligible individual reaches 18," said a file that lists out frequently asked questions regarding automatic voters registration.

A set of slides that Wan Junaidi (above) used in his presentation showed that the EC plans to gazette their latest supplementary electoral rolls on the 16th of every month.

This means that an individual who reaches their 18th birthday in January may officially become a registered voter by Feb 16.

Incomplete NRD details will prevent auto-registration

According to the minister, the EC will depend on the voter's latest address in the National Registration Department's (NRD) system to determine their constituency.

However, for those who list a general address or have incomplete details in the NRD system, they would not be registered.

For civil servants and members of security forces who are eligible to register as absentee voters, they would have to submit an application to the EC to change their status.

The government is expecting a total of 5.8 million additional voters when Undi18 and automatic voters registration comes into force on Dec 15, including about 1.2 million youths between the age of 18 and 20.

In a press statement today, Wan Junaidi said that the number of new voters represents around a 40 percent increase in registered voters, from 15.8 million to 21.1 million.

"In fact, the number of eligible voters is expected to increase every month," he added. - Mkini
