'Welcome to Sungai Buloh Prison' poster for Najib fake - Prisons Department

Following the appellate court's decision this morning that upheld former premier Najib Abdul Razak's convictions in the SRC International corruption case, a poster purportedly of the Prison Department welcoming him to Sungai Buloh prison has gone viral on social media.

The poster, which had the Prisons Department logo on top, stated “Selamat Datang to Sungai Buloh Prison” to Najib, with a sarcastic phrase that tells him to not pick up any bar soap from the prison floor.

The department has since denied that they issued the message.

“Fake news,” it said in a short statement posted on Twitter and Facebook.

Also attached is a copy of the poster, which has been emblazoned with a big “Palsu” note.

Earlier today, the Court of Appeal dismissed Najib's appeal to reverse the guilty verdict and sentencing over seven charges encompassing abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering.

A three-person bench chaired by Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil unanimously arrived at the decision, after they found that Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali did not err in his judgment to convict Najib last year.

The former premier was seeking to set aside the Kuala Lumpur High Court’s ruling on July 28 last year, which found him guilty on one charge of abuse of position as then premier, three counts of criminal breach of trust, and three counts of money laundering involving RM42 million of funds from SRC.

The court also maintained the 12 years imprisonment and RM210 million fine that Nazlan had imposed against Najib, saying that they were not excessive given the facts of the offences, but allowed the Pekan MP's application to have a stay of execution pending his appeal at the Federal Court. - Mkini
