A new logo won’t help PN win votes, says analyst

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) plan to use a new logo for the next general election (GE15) is unlikely to sway votes in its favour, says a political analyst.

Kartini Aboo Talib.

Kartini Aboo Talib of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia said a party’s logo does not influence voters, particularly those in urban areas and in states where PN’s rivals are strong.

She said even in the case of PAS strongholds like Kelantan, Terengganu and parts of Kedah and Perak, a new logo would not have an impact.

“For PAS, even if they use a different logo, their hardcore supporters will continue to vote for them,” she said.

She was commenting on reports that PN will use a new logo for GE15. The coalition’s current logo comprises the words “Perikatan Nasional” in white against a dark blue background.

PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin has said they plan to “improve” on the logo, including by using a symbol.

Another analyst, Universiti Teknologi Mara’s Mujibu Abd Muis, said party logos had little impact on voters in this day and age as they had more access to information about the parties themselves.

He said a party’s logo was less important than election candidates or manifestos.

“Pakatan Harapan (PH) and PKR used different logos in Johor, and Gabungan Parti Sarawak used a new logo in Sarawak. The results indicate that the logos did not influence the voters,” he said.

In the case of PH and PKR, he said, the use of different logos did not add to their votes. - FMT
