PETALING JAYA: Malaysian high jumper Nauraj Singh Randhawa suffered an ankle injury at the world athletics championships yesterday and finished last with “no jumps”.
Team manager Josephine Mary Singarayar said Nauraj had undergone medical tests soon after his disastrous campaign in Oregon.
Nauraj, who is based in Germany, will have further tests to determine the seriousness of the injury after he returns to Leipzig tomorrow.
The injury has cast doubts over his campaign at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham next month.
Nauraj was also reported to have suffered an ankle injury at the Sea Games in Hanoi recently, when he cleared a poor 2.18m for the silver medal.
His failure to secure gold caused Malaysia’s dominance in the Sea Games men’s high jump event since 2005 to come to an end.
Yesterday, Nauraj, 30, finished last with “no jumps” after failing to clear the starting mark of 2.17 at all three attempts.
Many had expected him to emulate the feat of Lee Hup Wei who made the finals of the high jump at the world meet in Doha in 2019.
Nauraj holds the national record of 2.30m. He cleared 2.26m at his first world championships in London in 2017, but failed to qualify for the final. - FMT
