Annuar offers to meet with price hike protest leaders to find solution

Communications and Multimedia Minister Annuar Musa has offered to meet with price hike protest leaders in order to find a solution to the country’s dire inflation crisis.

Annuar (above), who heads the special jihad task force on inflation, said that he was willing to hear ideas from these leaders.

“I offer this to the demo (price hike demonstration) leaders: if you have the time, come see me.

“If you have ideas, I want to hear them. I also am not capable of solving this alone.

“To those who are demonstrating, if they want to help, help me find a way. I’m no Superman,” said Annuar today after the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation award-giving ceremony at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

The minister said this in response to Amanah president Mohamad Sabu's remarks that a larger-scale protest could take place in the coming months against inflation and corruption.

According to a report by the online news portal The Vibes, Mohamad had said the protest may be joined by non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as Bersih but kept mum on other details of the proposed protest.

“I will be heading to the streets when the date is finalised because the government does not appear to be listening to us,” he was quoted as saying yesterday.

“We will discuss with the other NGO, and if possible, we want to be together with them. However, there’s no date yet, but it will be this year. We are only in the early stages (of discussion).”

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob on Wednesday announced that the task force led by Annuar will have the duty to gather information from all relevant ministries, agencies and the public to draft and coordinate strategies to resolve inflation-related issues.

Other task force members include Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Ronald Kiandee, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mustapa Mohamed and Chief Secretary to the Government Mohd Zuki Ali.

Annuar also mentioned today that the task force is scheduled to meet with Bank Negara Malaysia and field experts to discuss the matter.

"We know we are not the only country hit by inflation. The whole world is facing it and it is something complex, not easy.

"What is important is that we try to solve it as there are things within our control and things that are not," he said. - Mkini
