Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the reduced chicken price subsidy is to enable the money to be channelled directly to the rakyat through the Bantuan Keluarga Malaysia (BKM) cash aid.
He explained that the current chicken price subsidy is not only benefiting Malaysians but also foreigners.
This meant that non-citizens working in this country are also benefiting from the chicken price subsidy that is only supposed to be enjoyed by Malaysians, Ismail Sabri said.
“If we give chicken subsidies, it is not only Malaysians who benefit. Foreign workers also… Rohingyas also buy subsidised chicken.
“That is why we give BKM money, we do not want to let foreigners enjoy the benefits of the subsidies.
“We take a bit (of reduction from the subsidies) and give it directly to the rakyat (through BKM),” he said while attending a kenduri rakyat event in conjunction with the Aspirasi Keluarga Malaysia roadshow programme held in Kampung Gajah, Pasir Salak, Perak today.
Ceiling price RM9.40 per kg
On June 29, the cabinet decided not to float the prices of chicken and agreed to set the ceiling price at RM9.40 per kg for Peninsular Malaysia, effective July 1. Previously, it was set at RM8.90 per kg.
Agriculture and Food Industries Minister Ronald Kiandee said the cabinet also agreed to set the ceiling price for chicken eggs at RM0.45 each for Grade A, RM0.43 each for Grade B and RM0.41 each for Grade C, in the peninsula.
Ismail Sabri said the reduction of the subsidies enabled the government to add to the total BKM given to the rakyat, with the government providing BKM cash aid up to RM2,600 a year for targeted groups.
The prime minister added that the total amount for BKM cash aid may be increased if the prices for goods continue to rise. - Mkini
