PETALING JAYA: Malindo Air took off as Batik Air at its rebranding ceremony here today, with the airline announcing it would add 17 Boeing 737-8 aircraft to its fleet.
Batik Air CEO Mushafiz Mustafa Bakri said the rebranding would enable the airline to synchronise activities with sister airline Batik Air Indonesia and be recognised internationally, in tandem with its parent company, Lion Group of airlines.
The rebranding of Malindo Air after 10 years holds much promise and benefits not just for the airline, but also the air transport industry, said transport minister Wee Ka Siong at the ceremony.
He said Batik Air and the Lion Group had plans for KLIA to be the gateway for transit passengers from Indonesia to points in the Asia-Pacific and vice versa.
“Batik Air will promote the seamless transfers of these passengers via KLIA. All this will enhance the future growth and connectivity for KLIA and the Malaysian aviation market,” he said.
Malindo Air was the first airline in the world to fly the Boeing 737 MAX-8 in 2017. However the airline’s fleet comprised the 737 NG variant and ATR turboprop aircraft by 2019, when the 737 MAX-8 was grounded worldwide after two fatal crashes.
The 737 MAX received international clearance to return to the skies in June last year.
