It has been 13 years since DAP political aide Teoh Beng Hock was found dead after being held under MACC custody.
While closure remains elusive for his family, his sister Teoh Lee Lan has her eye on the future, and asked whether DAP is still trapped in a bad dream following the Sheraton Move.
"The general election is around the corner, but have you woken up from the nightmare of the political coup.
"Have you prepared yourselves to tell us your aspirations and policies? How are you going to reform our beloved country? What are your short and long-term goals as well as policies that need to be implemented immediately?
"In Beng Hock's case, can your plans prevent repeated mistakes and bring closure to this case?" she asked during a memorial ceremony in Kuala Lumpur today.
She also pondered how her late brother would view the current political turmoil if he was still alive.
Beng Hock was found dead on July 16, 2009, on the fifth-floor service corridor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, after being questioned overnight at the Selangor MACC headquarters on the 14th floor.
At the time of his death, he had been a political aide to Selangor executive councillor and DAP Seri Kembangan assemblyperson Ean Yong Hian Wah.
In 2014, the Court of Appeal ruled that he died from a fall that could have been accelerated by unlawful actions of persons unknown, including MACC officers.
The court also ordered the police to investigate the death. However, the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) found no criminal elements in his death.
Judicial review
In June 2018, the new Harapan government agreed to re-open the case.
Police began questioning MACC officers in a renewed probe in 2019.
It was reported that on Sept 3, 2021, the AGC had sent back investigation papers to the police to conduct further investigations.
Beng Hock's family are currently seeking a judicial review to compel the police to complete investigations.
DAP chairperson Lim Guan Eng, who was among the 50 party members and student activists who attended the memorial today, repeated his claim that the probe had been stonewalled by Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin.
"The cabinet decision (to re-open investigations into Beng Hock's death was overthrown and betrayed by then home minister (Muhyiddin), and that same person later became prime minister.
"We have no confidence in him at all," Lim said, adding that DAP would never work with Muhyiddin again.
He also reiterated that DAP would never forget about Beng Hock's case, nor spare those involved with his murder. - Mkini
