Umno sec-gen confident Bersatu counterpart will 'help' with ROS troubles

Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan has taken a veiled jab at his Bersatu counterpart Hamzah Zainudin as Umno continues its nail-biting wait for the Registrar of Societies (ROS) to decide on its fate.

Speaking in an interview last night, Ahmad quipped that Hamzah - who is also the home minister - would surely help Umno through its troubles.

On July 7, the ROS said that a decision on Umno’s constitutional amendment application was to be revealed at the very latest by July 16.

The party had sought approval from the ROS to amend its constitution, in order to enable the postponement of its party polls until six months after a general election.

However, the registrar has yet to respond to Umno’s request.

Ahmad had said that the ROS still has one to two weeks to decide on the party’s application.

Asked about Umno’s next move should the party’s ROS application fall flat, he replied dryly that Hamzah would intervene in Umno’s favour.

“My Bersatu counterpart (Hamzah) who is in charge of the Home Ministry knows very well.

“Of course, he will help to strengthen Umno before the 15th general election,” Ahmad said in an exclusive interview with news portal MalaysiaGazette.

Hopes no obstacles

Additionally, Ahmad expressed his hopes that Hamzah would not face any obstacles in assisting Umno.

“He (Hamzah) also mentioned that the ROS is independent. Is this true? This is another question. We hope it’s true that the ROS is professional,” he added.

Yesterday, Hamzah said that he lacked authority over the ROS - despite it being under his ministry.

The home minister had stressed to reporters that he did not have the authority to resolve Umno’s ROS troubles.

“As a minister, I only supervise it,” Hamzah was quoted as saying.

According to Ahmad, the party had submitted additional information to the ROS twice in their application to amend its constitution, in order to enable the postponement of the party polls until six months after a general election.

Asked about the party’s contingency plans on the matter, Ahmad refused to divulge any information.

The Umno secretary-general previously said that the party has two options if the ROS does not approve its constitutional amendment to delay the party election.

These are a contingency plan he called “Plan B” - about which no details were provided - while the other option is to hold its internal election as required, which is by December this year. - Mkini
