Police have called up Amanah president Mohammad Sabu to its Bukit Aman headquarters today over a video announcing a series of flashmobs to protest against the price hikes of goods.
The Kota Raja MP, who is also known as Mat Sabu, was being investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for allegedly publishing or circulating any statement with intent to cause fear or alarm to the public, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) for allegedly abusing network facilities.
His lawyer Faiz Fadzil who accompanied him said the questioning began at 11.15am and ended at 1.15pm.
He added that the police had confiscated Mohammad’s phone.
“This is an inappropriate action as the video has nothing to do with the (party) president's mobile phone.
“I have received (Mat Sabu’s) instruction to take legal action against the police for acting in violation of the right to privacy and the principles of justice guaranteed by the Federal Constitution,” Faiz said in a statement.
A video of Mohammad (above, right) circulated over the weekend where he is seen announcing the flashmobs which were set to take place throughout the country at 5.15pm last Saturday (July 16).
Bukit Aman also summoned DAP central executive committee member Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali for questioning today over a Facebook post dated June 22.
In the post, the former Paloh assemblyperson had called on the public to protest against the rising cost of living.
Sheikh Umar is also being investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the CMA.
In a statement today, he said the questioning took place for an hour and 30 minutes. He was represented by a lawyer from Karpal Singh & Co.
He added that the police also confiscated his phone, which was later returned at 1.30pm.
Demand for action
Amanah leaders previously held a protest outside the Kampung Baru mosque in the capital on July 1, demanding the government return food subsidies, abolish food import permits and for the issue of price hikes to be raised in the next Parliament sitting.
Amanah mobilisation chief Sany Hamzan gave the government until July 16 to meet their demands, warning that a bigger gathering would be held if no action was taken.
Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani then advised the public against attending flashmobs or rallies that do not abide by the provisions of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
He said that strict action would be taken against flashmob participants if they failed to abide by the law. - Mkini
