Kuala Lumpur police have identified 30 of some 100 individuals linked to an anti-price hike rally in the city centre today for investigations under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 (PAA).
Dang Wangi district police chief Noor Dellhan Yahaya in a statement released several hours after some 100 protesters gathered outside the Sogo shopping centre, said all the individuals and others yet to be identified will be questioned under Section 9(5) of the PAA.
"On July 23, from 2pm to 3 pm a gathering that did not comply with the law was held outside Sogo and (along) Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Kuala Lumpur.
"Observations found over 100 individuals comprising students, political party members, as well as others identified and yet to be identified, has gathered for a #Turun rally," said Noor Dellhan, citing protest signs including "Potong Gaji Menteri" and "Turun & Lawan.
Noor Delhan said the Dang Wangi district police headquarters' Criminal Investigation Department had opened an investigation paper under Section 9(5) PAA 2012.
"So far, 30 individuals have been identified, and all individuals involved in the rally will be summoned to the Dang Wangi district police station for their statements to be recorded in connection with the probe.
"The police are advising the public against involvement in any activities that go against the law, and stern action will be taken under laws still in force," he added.
Taking to Twitter, political secretary to DAP national deputy chairperson Gobind Singh Deo, Mandeep Singh, confirmed that he was contacted by Dang Wangi police as one of the individuals under probe.
He said others on the list include DAP’s Ketari assemblyperson Young Syefura Othman, PKR Youth chief Adam Adli Abdul Halim, former Muda secretary-general Amir Abdul Hadi, Suaram executive director Sevan Doraisamy, as well as Undi18 co-founders Nur Qyira Yusri and Tharma Pillai.
“We will be discussing with our lawyers for the next step,” said Mandeep.
Earlier, police had swiftly moved to stop the Turun protesters' attempted march to Dataran Merdeka from Sogo, where they gathered with their demands that Putrajaya springs into action to deal with the hike in prices of goods.
Their five demands to the government are: cutting the pay of ministers, government subsidies to be continued, delivering decent assistance to the people, controlling the prices of goods, and addressing the issue of food security.
Section 9(5) of the PAA stipulates a maximum fine of RM10,000 for the organiser of an assembly who failed to provide the officer in charge of the police district in which the assembly will be held with a 10-day notice. - Mkini
