DPM deal on paper? No such thing, says Umno info chief

Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan has denied allegations that Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob signed a deal with Perikatan Nasional (PN) on cabinet positions.

Ismail Sabri and Shahril both sit in the Umno supreme council.

Shahril (above) said that if there was such a deal, he questioned why its existence was only being made public now.

"There is no deal as far as I know. If there was one, why are we only hearing it now? Why do we have (four) senior ministers?

"PAS is in PN as well. We've never heard them talk about it. Therefore, I consider (talks about such a deal) as a piece of fiction authored by desperate people," he told Utusan Malaysia.

Deal exists, says Wan Saiful

Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan had recently claimed that this deal existed and hoped that Ismail Sabri would honour the deal.

Apart from the deputy prime minister's position, Bersatu is also lobbying Ismail Sabri to replace Zuraida Kamaruddin as the plantation industries and commodities minister.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob

Shahril believed that Ismail Sabri would not bow to pressure because the priority now was to fix the economy. Moreover, the current parliamentary term is about to expire.

"The cabinet and the National Recovery Council (chaired by Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin) should be focusing on helping the prime minister, not seeking positions," he said.

Meanwhile, Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said Bersatu was being "shameless" for seeking positions.

"Is it not enough that we have the biggest cabinet (in history)? There are 70 ministers and deputy ministers. PN alone has 33 ministers and deputy ministers while Umno has only 20.

"Do you not feel ashamed that you are seeking positions without a public mandate?" wrote Asyraf on his Facebook page. - Mkini
