PETALING JAYA: Former secretary-general of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), Sieh Kok Chi, died on July 16 at the age of 83.

The former water polo player contributed significantly to the development of sports, and his professional contributions advanced the Olympic movement in Malaysia.

Sieh had volunteered his services to the OCM since 1974, where he had served in various committees and task forces before being elected as the honorary secretary in 1992.

In a statement, OCM president Norza Zakaria described Sieh’s death as a great loss to the sporting fraternity and Olympic movement in Malaysia.

“But his spirit and immense drive to our cause will continue to inspire us all the time.”

Norza said Sieh also left behind “incredible legacies”, including the establishment of the council’s administrative structure, the OCM trust fund and drawing up the funding and reimbursement policy for “B” category athletes.

The wake will be held tomorrow (2pm-10pm) and on Thursday (12pm-10pm) at Nirvana Centre Kuala Lumpur (Nirvana 2).

Sports associations and prominent individuals from the sporting community also took to social media to convey their condolences.

Youth and sports minister Ahmad Faizal Azumu said Sieh’s passing was a great loss for the country.

“There is no denying his contributions. He is irreplaceable,” he said in a tweet.

The Malaysian Fencing Federation said on Facebook that they were devastated by the news of Sieh’s passing.

“He has been a great supporter of fencing and we truly mourn his passing,” it said.

Former hockey international Maninderjit Singh said he was deeply saddened by the news.

“We lost another sporting hero. Rest in peace and we will meet again,” he said. - FMT
