Govt mulls letting Lynas keep cracking and leaching facility

Science, Technology, and Innovation (Mosti) Minister Dr Adham Baba confirmed his ministry has received an application from Australian mining company Lynas to review key conditions in their operating licence.

The conditions, set by the Pakatan Harapan government, were to move its cracking and leaching facility, which produces radioactive Water Leach Purification (WLP) residue, outside Malaysia before July 2023.

"Mosti through the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) has received Lynas' application to review the terms of the licence and it is still in the evaluation process and will be taken up for consideration by the Board, in accordance with the provisions of Section 17 (1) of the Atomic Energy Licensing Act 1984 (Act 304), AELB.

"In conclusion, AELB is always committed to ensuring that the safety and interests of workers, the public, and the environment are prioritised in making decisions regarding the application," Adham said in an oral answer at the Dewan Rakyat.

The minister said this in response to a question from Bentong MP Wong Tack who asked Adham to state whether Lynas had applied to maintain their 'cracking and leaching' facility in Malaysia, as well as the status of the company's application.

On May 18, Malaysiakini reported that Lynas allegedly asked the government to waive important conditions in its operating licence.

At that point in time, the AELB told Malaysiakini that it had not received any application from Lynas to renew its licence.

This came after a source revealed that Lynas made the request to Adham before Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Lynas gave several reasons for the removal of the condition, namely the loss of highly skilled workers and economic loss.
