No one prosecuted for minimum wage non-compliance yet

Putrajaya has warned 118 employers for failing to comply with the Minimum Wage Order 2022 which came into force on May 1.

According to a written reply by Human Resources Minister M Saravanan, the warnings were issued based on 157 complaints received in June.

"(Errant employers) were advised to comply. Failure will result in legal action being taken," he said.

Saravanan's written reply was addressed to Mujahid Yusof Rawa (Harapan-Parit Buntar) and Shamsul Anuar Nasara (BN-Lenggong).

The minister explained that no employer had been prosecuted for non-compliance so far because some employees only received their salary in early June.

He added that it was too early to calculate a compliance rate.

As of June 30, Saravanan said 20,452 employers had been investigated for compliance, involving 3,049 workplaces.

The minimum wage was increased from RM1,200 to RM1,500 on May 1.

However, employers with less than five staff are exempt from this rule until Jan 1, 2023.

Non-compliance may result in a fine of up to RM10,000 for each employee. - Mkini
