Group to hold price hike protest in KL on Saturday

A group that called itself the Turun Movement today said that it would carry out a street protest this coming Saturday, July 23, to demand that Putrajaya springs into action to deal with the hike in prices of goods.

In a statement, the Turun organising committee expressed their disappointment over politicians whom they said failed to understand the reality of life on the ground.

"It had been 22 days since Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the creation of the Special Jihad Task Force to Tackle Inflation. This team, led by Communications Minister Annuar Musa and with the participation of Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz and three other ministers, is failing to address inflation, which is the most crucial problem in the country today.

"Besides going around to visit wet markets and grocery stores, the members of this task force did not come up with any new idea that can help control the increasing prices of goods and provide assistance to the people," the committee said.

It also pointed out that Ismail Sabri had been travelling to visit 11 countries this year when many Malaysians are struggling to make ends meet.

Turn added that on top of the issues faced by the people, Sabah state assembly members recently had also approved a decision to increase their own salaries when the rakyat are struggling with low pay.

"All cabinet ministers' overseas trips should be put on hold until the cost of living problem is solved.

"Thus, we will take it to the street this Saturday with five demands to the government: that ministers' pay is cut, government subsidies be continued, deliver decent assistance to the people, control prices of goods, and address the issue of food security," the movement said.

According to their statement, Turun is calling for all Malaysians to join the protest to be held at the Sogo shopping complex at 2pm this Saturday.

"We have no choice other than to 'turun' (take it to the streets) so that this issue will not be simply swept aside by the prime minister and other ministers." - Mkini
