BELURAN: Problems with land ownership are holding back efforts to improve or repair schools in certain states, says education minister Radzi Jidin.

He said Sabah and Sarawak, and Felda settlements, were among those where ownership of the land on which schools are situated has not been transferred to the federal government.

The education ministry is pushing for school land to be transferred from state governments to the federal lands and mines department to ease future planning of school infrastructure, he said.

“There are instances where the school site is still not owned by the lands and mines department. So new construction efforts to replace the dilapidated buildings cannot be implemented.

“We are looking into it seriously and discussing with the state governments so that the transfers can be done quickly,” he told reporters after attending a Teachers’ Day celebration in the Beluran constituency.

He also asked all district education officers to conduct school visits more frequently to identify the problems there and to take immediate action to resolve them.

Agriculture and food industries minister Ronald Kiandee, who is Beluran MP, said development of basic facilities, including schools, in rural areas was a long process.

“I’m confident if rural students are given the opportunity to undergo a comprehensive education, they have the potential of doing well in life,” he said. - FMT
