Local record label blames 'hacking' for Lofi Girl fiasco

A Malaysian record label has blamed hackers for the company's role in ending one of the world's longest YouTube livestream videos, which has earned the ire of fans globally.

A spokesperson for FMC Music Sdn Bhd told Malaysiakini that hackers used the company's YouTube account to file a copyright infringement claim against the Lofi Girl YouTube channel.

According to the spokesperson, the copyright claim was filed over the long weekend when no one in the company was at work.

"We only found out this morning when we came into the office and realised that someone had hacked into our channel and made the copyright claim.

"We have already reported this to Google and we are hoping that this works out in the end," said the spokesperson.

The spokesperson said the company does not have a reason to file a copyright claim because they produce Malay pop songs while the Lofi Girl livestream in question contained instrumental hip-hop.

Lofi Girl is a French record company which has run a 24/7 livestream on YouTube titled "lofi hip hop radio – beats to relax/study to" since February 2020.

Mashable has reported that the livestream lasted two years, four months, and 18.5 days before its suspension.

The stream, which features an anime-style woman sitting at a desk accompanied by hip hop "lo-fi beats", has a cultural impact on teenagers and young adults who tune in to relax while studying or working.

At the time of writing, the Lofi Girl YouTube channel has 10.7 million subscribers.

After Lofi Girl questioned the legitimacy of the copyright infringement complaint on Twitter, YouTube responded by stating the claim was erroneous.

However, the livestream, which ended following the copyright claim, will now need to start afresh, thus marking the end of an era.

"This has got to be the best livestream on the internet," wrote YouTube user Porkishi the lost traveller in the comments section of the livestream video.

"…it literally brung so many countries together with the power of music." - Mkini
