KUALA LUMPUR: An opposition MP has voiced concern that Parliament could be dissolved before the anti-hopping bill is passed.
“What will happen to the bill if Parliament is dissolved before it is passed?”, asked Hassan Karim (PH-Pasir Gudang) while debating the anti-hopping bill.
“Is there enough time to pass the bill in both Houses (Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara) as well as to present it to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for his assent?”
Hassan urged Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar to guarantee that the dissolution of Parliament would not stop the bill from being enacted.
The current Parliament’s term is until July 16 next year.
A political agreement signed between Ismail’s government and Pakatan Harapan (PH) last September states that the next general election cannot be held before July 31.
The agreement means that Parliament cannot be dissolved before then.
Earlier today, Ismail said Parliament could be dissolved at any time after July 31 as the government had decided against extending the memorandum of understanding with PH. - FMT
