KUALA LUMPUR: Muda’s Puteri Wangsa assemblyman Amira Aisya Abd Aziz has lodged a police report against a Twitter user for making lewd remarks about her.

In her police report, the Muda deputy president claimed the person had made several rude comments about her breasts on Twitter on Saturday.

Speaking to the media outside the Dang Wangi police headquarters, Amira said she didn’t mind if the online comments were intended to be constructive criticism, but sexual harassment was something that she wouldn’t tolerate.

“If the comments are in the form of sexual harassment, it’s important for me to lodge a report.

“We must let the community, especially women, know that this is a serious issue.

“My report today is to send a message that it’s not only about protecting myself but also other women out there,” she said.

In connection with the issue, Amira also urged women, family and community development minister Rina Harun to push for the anti-sexual harassment bill to be gazetted as soon as possible.

“When the anti-sexual harassment bill was tabled and approved (in the Dewan Rakyat), it was a small victory for sexual harassment victims.

“The bill has to undergo a process before being gazetted. So, I want the minister to quickly push for this bill to be gazetted,” she said.

The anti-sexual harassment bill, proposed in 2011, was finally approved by the Dewan Rakyat on July 20.

Rina had said that the bill would be presented to the Dewan Negara for a second and third reading in August.

It would then be submitted for approval by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Meanwhile, Amira’s lawyer Luqman Long, who is Muda information chief, said he hoped the police would investigate the case under Section 509 of the Penal Code for words or gestures intended to insult the modesty of a person.

However, he said there was a possibility that the police would also investigate the case under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

“If there’s an act dealing specifically with sexual harassment, then the legal provision would be clearer,” he said. - FMT
