No objections from cabinet to new anti-hopping law

The cabinet has adopted the new anti-hopping law unanimously, no questions asked, according to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

Therefore, said Wan Junaidi (above), the bill will go through Parliament according to the schedule proposed by a special select committee formed to review the bill.

The bill - the Constitutional (Amendment)(No 3) Bill 2022 - will be tabled on Monday and debated on July 27 and July 28. Briefings for MPs will be held over the two prior days.

The cabinet had put the brakes on the bill twice - once sometime in March and again on April 6 - ostensibly to solicit further feedback.

Critics had argued that the cabinet should have let Parliament decide on the contents of the bill as that was the proper forum to make laws.

Eventually, the Dewan Rakyat had on April 11 formed a special select committee - headed by Wan Junaidi - to review the bill in a bipartisan manner.

The select committee wrapped up its work on July 12.

This bill was a direct response to the Sheraton Move political coup in February 2020, which has led to Malaysia having three different prime ministers in under two years. - Mkini
