PSC to probe award to Sulu descendants

The Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on international affairs will investigate the seizure of Malaysian assets by the descendants of the Sulu sultanate.

For now, the PSC intends to subpoena Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah, attorney-general Idrus Harun and Law Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, among others.

At a press conference today, select committee chairperson Salahuddin Ayub (Pakatan Harapan-Pulai) said the PSC decided to do so in view of the Dewan Rakyat refusing to debate the matter.

"The PSC has discussed the matter and is of the view that the claim by the Sulu descendants against Malaysia is very serious and will affect public interest if not handled properly," he said.

Salahuddin added that the PSC has a role to check on the government and uphold parliamentary democracy.

He said the proceeding is expected to start on Aug 11.

Other members of the PSC are Nazri Abdul Aziz (BN-Padang Rengas), Azizah Mohd Dun (PN-Beaufort), Che Abdullah Mat Nawi (PN-Tumpat), Tiong King Sing (GPS-Bintulu), Sim Tze Tzin (Harapan-Bayan Baru), Kasthuri Patto (Harapan-Batu Kawan) and Awang Husaini Sahari (Harapan-Putatan).

In March, purported descendants of the Sulu sultanate secured a US$14.92 billion (RM62.59 billion) arbitration award from Malaysia.

The matter did not garner much attention until the claimants enforced it on July 11 by seizing two Petronas subsidiaries in Luxembourg.

This became the main topic for a lot of MPs when the Dewan Rakyat reconvened on July 18. However, speaker Azhar Azizan Harun refused to entertain calls for a debate.

Following this, Putrajaya held a closed-door briefing at a hotel on the matter for MPs. - Mkini
