Rafizi slams Maybank’s ‘insensitive’ withdrawal of suit against NFC head

Rafizi Ramli said the people had not forgotten how difficult it had been for banks to grant them flexibility to manage their debt over the past two years.

PETALING JAYA: PKR’s incoming deputy president Rafizi Ramli has criticised Maybank Singapore’s Ltd’s decision to withdraw its lawsuit against National Feedlot Corporation (NFC) chairman Mohamad Salleh Ismail and his two children.

Rafizi described Maybank Singapore’s decision as “insensitive” and called out what he claimed to be special treatment for Salleh’s family.

Salleh is the husband of former women, family and community development minister Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.

“It’s very insensitive of Maybank Singapore to discontinue its efforts to recover its debt, given that the ordinary people have been struggling with their own debts since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Rafizi on Facebook.

He said the people had not forgotten how difficult it had been for them to be granted flexibility from banks, including Maybank, to manage their debt over the past two years.

He said at the same time, Shahrizat’s family, “who owed millions in taxpayers’ money”, seemed to be given special treatment.

He also questioned the appointment of Salleh’s daughter, Wan Izzana Fatimah Zabedah, who is one of the defendants to the lawsuit, as a director of the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and Talent Corporation (TalentCorp).

She also sits on the panel of the Social Security Organisation (Socso).

Yesterday, Bernama reported that Maybank Singapore had withdrawn the lawsuit against Salleh and his two children for allegedly defaulting on two housing loan facilities amounting to S$2,534,203.41 for property in Singapore.

Lawyer Wan Mohammad Arfan Wan Othman, representing the defendants, said both parties had reached a settlement. - FMT
