Sabah dengue cases jump by 101.9 per cent

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has seen a jump in dengue cases by 101.9 per cent to 1,791 cases from 887 cases during the same period last year.

State Community Development and People's Wellbeing Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya said the state Health Department had taken proactive measures to contain the mosquito-borne disease.

Sandakan recorded 327 cases in six areas up to July 2, an increase of 436 per cent, he said in his reply to Hiew Vun Zin (Warisan-Karamunting) at the State Legislative Assembly sitting here today

There are 11 dengue hotspots in Sandakan and cleaning-up efforts have been carried out in 18 localities, he adeded.

He said the state Health Department had also carried out vector control activities, such as inspecting shop premises, fogging, destroying mosquito breeding grounds and conducting health education awareness programmes.

Major cleaning-up exercises involving some 30 activities were also carried out in all the districts on June 25, he said.

He said 192,967 premises were inspected and 567 compounds were issued to shop owners under the Destruction of Disease-Bearing Insects Act 1975.

Fogging activities were carried out at 183,654 premises, he added.

Integrated enforcement operations had been implemented in high-risk dengue outbreak areas, he said.

"Health awareness promotion through infographics of the current dengue situation on social media and mass media has also been mooted."

To a supplementary question by Phoong Jin Zhe (DAP-Luyang), he said a health committee had been established in all state local authorities with members of departments at the district level to strengthen cooperation with the state Health Department in its crackdown on dengue. - NST
