Saifuddin zips lips on Tajuddin's status as ambassador

Foreign Affairs Minister Saifuddin Abdullah has continued to evade addressing lingering questions regarding Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman's status as Malaysia's ambassador to Indonesia.

Instead, he said Wisma Putra's policy is to not reveal the name of any envoys before they receive their appointment letters from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

"The names will only be revealed on that day, meaning if His Majesty hands over appointment letters to five (envoys), then it is five, if ten, then ten," Saifuddin (above) said at a press conference in Kuantan when asked about Tajuddin today.

"That is why Wisma Putra usually does not issue any statements on who will soon be an ambassador... we don't issue such statements," he added.

The Pasir Salak MP was previously revealed as Malaysia's ambassador to Indonesia and was set to receive his appointment letter together with four others from the king on June 20.

However, the ceremony was postponed as the king was hospitalised for a medical procedure.

When the investiture ceremony was rescheduled to last Tuesday, Tajuddin's name was not on the list.

Appointment triggered public backlash

There have been conflicting reports since on whether his appointment is delayed or cancelled, and there have been no official comments on the matter.

Tajuddin's appointment triggered a public backlash, with many questioning his ability to act as a diplomat due to his track record of being combative and undiplomatic.

He was removed as Prasarana chairperson in May last year for his insensitive handling of an LRT accident that left scores injured.

Days after the appointment ceremony on June 20 was postponed, Tajuddin was sacked as an appointed Umno supreme council member.

This was over a falling out with party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Following this, Tajuddin held a tell-all press conference, where he railed against Zahid, accusing him of lying to Umno about backing opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister. - Mkini
