KUCHING: The Sarawak government will formulate a basic economic policy to become a net exporter by 2030, says Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg.
He said this policy would be in line with policies involving the agricultural sector which needed to be clearly formulated to ensure that Malaysia becomes a net exporter of food.
“If we put in place the right policy in terms of agriculture, we can become a net exporter. Sarawak has vast land, cheap electricity and expertise.
“We can contribute to the gross domestic product,” he said when launching the National Anti-Drug Day and the Keluarga Malaysia Direct From Farm Sale event at Dataran Gedong today.
Abang Johari said a mini satellite campus of Swinburne University Sarawak would be set up in Gedong, specifically for research and technology related to padi and agriculture.
Abang Johari emphasised that modern and new agricultural approaches should be implemented in the state to reduce dependence on imported products.
“We will have another satellite campus at Unimas (Universiti Malaysia Sarawak) for research. The state government will bear the cost,” he said. - FMT
