Kalwant Singh has been executed in Singapore today for drug trafficking, his sister Sonia confirmed.
Kalwant, 31, was arrested in 2013 for trafficking 120.9g of diamorphine into Singapore before being sentenced to death in 2016.
Yesterday, Singapore’s Court of Appeal dismissed Kalwant’s final attempt to stay his execution.
Also hung was Kalwant’s co-accused, Singaporean Norasharee Gous.
The execution today came not long after another Malaysian, Nagaenthran K Dharmalingam, was executed in Singapore on April 27, for drug trafficking.
Families present
Singaporean human rights activist Kirsten Han tweeted that there will be a short wake held for Kalwant in Singapore.
Additionally, she confirmed that both families were at the prison to collect their belongings and death certificates.
The protest, organised by Amnesty International, Anti-Death Penalty Asia Network (Adpan), and Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram), was an emotional affair and lasted around half an hour.
Protesters pleaded with the Singaporean government to stop the execution of Kalwant, and to repeal the country’s harsh death penalty.
