Tok Mat was just preparing for the worst in Najib’s case, says Umno man

Umno Supreme Council member Isham Jalil (left) said Mohamad Hasan was merely giving his views based on the speculative question posed by the Asia Times journalist.

PETALING JAYA: Mohamad Hasan was merely preparing himself for the worst-case scenario in Najib Razak’s corruption trial and it did not mean that he wanted the former prime minister to be imprisoned, an Umno Supreme Council member said.

Isham Jalil said that the Umno deputy president, better known as Tok Mat, had once told him that one “should hope for the best, but prepare for the worst”.

He went on to point out that the question posed by the Asia Times journalist to Mohamad was speculative – namely, what if Najib were to be imprisoned.

Isham said Mohamad had given his views on the worst-case scenario.

“But this does not mean that he wants Najib to be incarcerated,” he said in a Facebook post tonight.

Isham said the headline to the story was not only inaccurate but unfair to both Mohamad and Najib.

On Tuesday, Mohamad refuted the report which implied that he believed Najib should go to jail, saying his remarks were taken out of context.

The former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar said that what he meant was that Najib must get a fair trial and if convicted, Najib would have to face the consequences.

Najib has filed an application asking the Federal Court to declare that he was denied a fair trial in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case.

He cited Court of Appeal judge Nazlan Mohd Ghazali’s alleged conflict of interest owing to his previous role as general counsel and company secretary for the Maybank Group.

Isham went on to say that when the report was published, those in Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional attempted to pit Umno leaders against each other and create a schism in the party.

He also said one or two Umno leaders aligned with Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin wanted to sensationalise the story.
