A small group of “power crazy” figures in Umno are causing instability in Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s government, alleged Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal.
In an interview with Malaysiapost, Wan Fayhsal said this minority group “could not stand” the successes of Ismail Sabri and his predecessor Muhyiddin Yassin.
“The cause of political instability in the coalition government today mostly stems from a small group of Umno leaders who are greedy.
“Previously, there was no deputy prime minister position (in Muhyiddin’s government). (Umno) demanded for it. When they got it, they still put pressure on Muhyiddin,” said Wan Fayhsal.
Last year, Ismail Sabri was promoted to deputy prime minister for just 40 days. His tenure ended on Aug 16, last year, when Muhyiddin stepped down as prime minister after losing the support of 11 Umno MPs.
Even though Ismail Sabri is an Umno vice-president, Wan Fayhsal said he was being attacked by his own party daily, specifically by Umno youth leader Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
“They see the government today as something alien, although the prime minister is from Umno.
“This is very irresponsible because they are playing political games in difficult times,” he said.
Give people a chance to breathe
Meanwhile, Wan Fayhsal said the general election should be put on hold because the government was still busy trying to contain the fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic.
“People are trying to make a living... they have no time for politics now. People get angry with politicians like me because politicians seem to not care about people who are suffering.
“Thus, give people a chance to breathe. Give them time to receive government aid. Give the government time to resolve these problems,” he said.
Wan Fayhsal said snap elections in Malacca and Johor over the past year showed low turnout rates, ostensibly because voters were tired of politics.
“Bersatu Youth disagreed with Umno’s pressuring Ismail Sabri to dissolve Parliament. We are seeing a trend towards low voter turnout.
“In March, when we had the Johor elections, we were facing the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, we are facing problems with inflation,” he said. - Mkini
