PETALING JAYA: A former deputy education minister has asked the government to explain what happened to the tablets for poor students, saying it has been two months since applications for the devices were closed.

“We want to know how many students applied. How many qualify (for the tablets)? And when will they receive their promised tablets?” asked Teo Nie Ching.

The Kulai MP said applications for the devices under the Peranti Siswa programme closed on May 15 but students had yet to receive any feedback on the status of their applications.

Previously, the communications and multimedia ministry said it would only begin distribution in July after the government re-tendered the contract for the supply of the tablets.

Teo urged the ministry to reassure students who were in the dark about the status of their applications.
