Wrong time to ask for posts of DPM, ministers, Najib tells Muhyiddin

Najib Razak claims Muhyiddin Yassin may have asked for the posts to prevent more MPs from leaving Bersatu.

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Najib Razak has lashed out at Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin for getting his priorities wrong at a time when the people are struggling with the rise in the cost of living, among other things.

The Pekan MP said the latter’s announcement yesterday that he met with Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to discuss various Cabinet and government positions was highly inappropriate.

“Why ask for government positions when the focus should be on rehabilitating the economy and controlling inflation,” Najib said in a Facebook post.

He added that this was not the time to ask for the posts of deputy prime minister and ministers or more committees to be formed.

“The general election (GE15) is around the corner. At the latest, it will be held in a year’s time. So are positions and committees the priority for Malaysians?

“The people come first and the focus should be on improving the economy and fighting inflation,” he said.

Yesterday, Muhyiddin said he met Ismail a few days ago to discuss cabinet appointments, including the position of deputy prime minister, which he said were related to an agreement that Perikatan Nasional (PN) had with the prime minister.

“I raised a few important issues including government appointments and not only to fill existing vacancies. New appointments should be considered based on PN’s agreement with the prime minister,” he told reporters.

The National Recovery Council (MKN) chief had also asked the government to speed up the formation of state MKN panels.

Najib said Muhyiddin was getting desperate with the spate of Bersatu MPs leaving the party with GE15 approaching and thus wanted these appointments as “sweeteners” to make them stay.

“I hope the government will not entertain his request. It must instead focus on the economy to keep inflation down,” he added. - FMT
