PETALING JAYA: A new naval headquarters is being planned for Bintulu, and all three armed services, namely the army, air force and navy, will increase their presence especially in the Bintulu area, defence minister Hishammuddin Hussein said today.

He said the plan was to increase defence capabilities while ensuring that the country’s strategic interests in Sarawak waters were protected from any threats.

“In order to ensure that efforts to safeguard the sovereignty of the waters in Sarawak can be implemented more holistically, the Naval Region 4 headquarters is being planned to be built in phases in the 12th Malaysia Plan and 13MP,” he said.

His statement was made after he made a courtesy call on Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg today accompanied by top military officials.

Hishammuddin said the army and the Border Regiment were being mobilised for increased readiness at the Sarawak-Kalimantan and Sarawak-Brunei borders.

He said 12 new military posts were being set up, taking into account the Indonesian government’s plans to move its capital to Kalimantan.

Hishammuddin said he would have detailed discussions with his Indonesian counterpart, Prabowo Subianto, at a general border committee meeting next week. - FMT
