Cancel concerts or risk ‘nationwide protest’, PAS says

PAS Youth today warned that it will be mobilising a "nationwide protest" if the government continues to grant permission for various concerts to be held in the country.

PAS Youth chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (above) cited inappropriate timing as among the reasons that no permission should be granted for concerts to be held.

"Inappropriate timing, unsuitable values and going against Islam as the religion of the federation.

"On our part, we (PAS Youth) will not hesitate to start a ‘nationwide protest’ if this matter is not addressed," he said in a statement.

The Pasir Mas MP also called upon relevant agencies to consider cancelling or revoking permissions granted for upcoming concerts.

‘Hedonistic culture’

Fadhli then urged like-minded NGOs and individuals sensitive to the issue to rise together and prevent the spread of "hedonistic culture".

"Let’s move this protest effort so that it reaches Seri Perdana," he said, in reference to the prime minister's official residence.

Fadhli's call today was made a week after US singer Billie Eilish held her concert at Stadium Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur. He had also objected to her concert, 12 hours after the show.

Among the international artistes slated to perform in Malaysia this year include Justin Bieber, Korean group Blackpink and Indonesian legends Dewa 19.

Ever since PAS joined the federal administration, the Islamist party had threatened protests over several matters including when the government decided not to cancel the 22 times “special draws” by lottery companies.

Meanwhile, Fadhli said PAS, through its cabinet members, will play their role to "ensure" that upcoming concerts get cancelled.

However, he hinted that there may be those who disagreed with his party's intentions, including Muslims themselves. - Mkini
