IPOH: Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the people would be disappointed if Datuk Seri Najib Razak is granted a royal pardon.

"There are people in power who can release Najib. Whether that person wants to release Najib, is up to him, not me to decide.

"But the first step is, the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob) can seek a royal pardon for Najib. Yang Di-Pertuan Agong can decide.

"When we ask people what if Najib release after stealing billion of ringgit, lying, of course, such an action would only disappoint the rakyat," he told reporters after attending Jelajah Sayang Bangsa in Station 18, Pasir Puteh here today.

Also present were Pejuang president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir and Perak Pejuang chairman Mior Nor Haidir Suhaimi.

The Federal Court on Tuesday upheld Najib's conviction and 12-year prison sentence and a fine of RM210 million for misappropriating RM42 million of SRC International Sdn Bhd funds.

His conviction saw the Pekan Member of Parliament became the first former prime minister of Malaysia to spend time behind bars following the ruling made by the five-member apex court bench chaired by Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat.

Dr Mahathir who is also Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) chairman said that there has been more than enough evidence presented in the court to fin him guilty.

"Three courts and nine different judges were involved in the case and all of them made the same decisions.

"Evidence after evidence was presented to support the judgement, yet Najib still said that it is all lies. What is the point of having courts and judges then?" he said.

It was reported today that Umno president, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party would organise a petition drive to push for Najib's royal pardon.

Zahid said all branch and division members would be instructed to participate to show their support for their former president who was incarcerated last week.

Earlier, Mahathir in his speech said the 15th General Election (GE15) is crucial to avoid the same party that robbed the people from ruling the country again.

"The next general election is very important. If we fail, the rogue government will continue to rule the country until GE16, and GE17, and they will abuse power again.

"We should not choose a dishonest leader who strongly believes that cash is king. We should choose a party or gerakan (GTA) so that we will have a better administration who follows the rule of law," he said. - NST
