Najib 'likely' to get pardoned, Dr M believes

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad believes that jailed ex-premier Najib Abdul Razak is “highly likely” to receive a pardon at some point in the future.

In a statement today, Mahathir lamented the various delays of Najib's SRC International Sdn Bhd trial and questioned whether the Pekan MP would really serve his full sentence.

"There is an English saying that says ‘justice delayed is justice denied’ which we can translate as ‘justice delayed is justice neglected’.

"Because Najib's SRC International case took a very long time (four years). Many cases of theft, misuse of power and corruption involving political figures were delayed and not brought to court.

"Some criminals have even died. Delay in trials will result in justice being neglected," said the Langkawi MP who now heads Pejuang.

On Tuesday, Najib, who served as the country's sixth prime minister from 2009 to 2018, was sent to the Kajang Prison to undergo his 12-year jail sentence after the Federal Court upheld his criminal convictions with regard to the seven charges linked to RM42 million funds from SRC International.

On that note, Mahathir suspected that as Najib is facing trial on other charges as well, the process may take a long time too, adding judges themselves may not be too happy with such delays.

"The delay was made worse by Najib's treatment of his lawyers and various reasons were used to delay and prevent the trial from reaching its conclusion," he said.

In general terms, Mahathir lamented that many reports have been lodged against corruption but the alleged perpetrators have yet to be tried in court.

“It’s very likely that criminals will escape punishments despite their crimes. Justice delayed is justice neglected indeed,” he said, without substantiating his claims. - Mkini
